Working with the NHS

Part of my work over a 10 year period has been in Mindful Practice within the NHS in Fife and was invited to assist and facilitated the initial training group based on the Jon Kabat Zinn 8 week Mindfulness Programme 2007. I then continued to support the work undertaken by the new facilitators of Mindfulness Practice within the NHS working with Compassionate Practice in the work place. I have also completed the Official Teacher Training Course within the NHS in Mindfulness Practice 2010 MBSR (Mindful Based Stress Reduction) and assisted with the first Mindfulness Course for Students at St Andrews University 2008.

I continue to be invited to conferences and individual sectors within NHS & Public Sector to support staff in relation to their Self-Care Practice.

Self-care Practice

My latest work has been research into Self Care of the Therapist and Carers; Invited by NHS Fife Psychologist team to outline the importance of Self-Care Practice on an energetic level and its affects. Self-Care is a fundamental must of any therapist or carer working in the capacity of compassion and empathy. This research highlighted the importance of body-mind work – connection to nature and the environment – nutrition – self challenge and a good support network. All encompassing, these findings made it clear the therapy I work with, Shiatsu Body-Mind work can offer so much in all aspects of the afore mentioned for individuals and care of self. To choose to receive this bodywork or train in Shiatsu you can be assured it covers all aspects vital to anyone’s health and well-being. This therapy (Shiatsu) is based on Mindful Practice in itself. Its main aim is to help facilitate the recipient to become more body aware and reconnected and to learn how to be more present and in the moment through touch & conscious breathing throughout a session (vital to the rebalancing of Vagus Nerve Tone). This whole concept encourages greater health of BODY & MIND all adding to the reasons I love the work I do as a Shiatsu Practitioner and teacher.

A further practice of training I have undertaken for my own Continued Professional Development has been in a form of dance and movement known as Biodanza (Dance of Life). This form of dance and movement engages deeply with “Being in the Moment” but this of course is different to Shiatsu and stillness. Biodanza is working with the mode of music and through movement, reconnecting with your body rhythm, and  reconnect with fellow human beings one to one, in small and in larger groups. This therapeutic work is highly respected and recognised internationally in the professional world of psychology. This form of movement bodywork and integration envelops body, mind and spirit in its practice.
I introduce selected aspects of this work in my workshops which covers, bodywork, touch and integration bringing interconnectedness to self and with other fellow human beings, a great need for humanity, community and a must to be encouraged in today’s isolating society.

All threads of my work have been to satisfy my enormous curiosity of the mind, body and spirit in all its capacity and functions and how it works not only on a physical level (the body) but it’s integration on an emotional, psychological and spiritual level and understanding the biology and physiology and pathology it encapsulates in relation to Shiatsu, This is all an extension of the work I do in my practice and hope as a teacher within the Aberdeen School of Shiatsu I can share my findings for the greater good.

I also have a background in Martial Arts (Tae Kwon Do) Hold a Black Belt and a title of world champion of Women’s Hand Destruction – I state this as an example in the use and projection of Ki.

Baby Shiatsu Massage – Trained with Karin Kalbantner, Acupressure for Babies and Shonishin with Dr Thomas Wernicke’s. I work with Pregnancy & Babies on a one to one within my Shiatsu Practice (see Shiatsu & Pregnancy)
